Steve Jenkins
Steve Jenkins, a picture book author and illustrator, was born in Hickory, North Carolina in 1952. Because his dad was in the military, Steve moved often. North Carolina, Panama, Virginia, Kansas, and Colorado were only some of the places he lived. In his free time, he liked to blow things up in the chemistry lab and read. Steve was and still is an obsessive reader. He was told a bedtime story every night until he was nine or ten. At age three, Steve learned how to read.
For college, Steve went to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He studied graphic design. After college, Steve moved to New York. Later, he worked in advertising and design. Then he got married to Robin Page. Then they started their own business. He published four books with Robin.
Some of Steve’s favorite things are science, reading, and blowing things up in the chemistry lab.
His inspiration for many of his books is based on some of the questions that his children asked him. Steve won the 2004 Caldecott Honor for What do You do With a Tail Like This? He also won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award.
Steve’s style includes the frequent appearance of animals, a few facts on a page, and collage. He makes his own paper. Six of his books are: Looking Down, Down, Down, Down, Actual Size, Prehistoric Actual Size, Never Smile at a Monkey, and How to Clean a Hippopotamus.
